Born on September 26, 1948, Vladimir Remek iz a Czech politician, diplomat, former astronaut and aviation corps officer. During the Soyuz 28 mission from March 2 to 10, 1978, he spent 7 days, 22 hours and 17 minutes in Earth's orbit.
Apart from being the first Czechoslovakian (and a Czech) in space, he was also the first non-American or non-Russian astronaut to achieve this feat. Before Remek space travel was reserved for Americans and Soviets only. Up until that point both of these nations had sent 43 astronauts to space, which made Remek the 87th person there. During his mission as an astronaut research expert he was joined by the Soviet cosmonaut Aleksey Gubarev. In their Soyuz 28 spacecraft the two of them docked with the orbiting Salyut 6 space station and conducted scientific research during the time they spent in orbit.
Here is a clip from the conversation shown during the opening ceremony.
A big thanks to Mr. Mato Pejić, Željko Podsednik and Daruvar Radio for their help with organizing this conference.
